About This Event

This two-day hands-on workshop introduces participants to the process of building a traditional adobe horno, or earthen oven. Participants work through the construction process while learning how to prepare and use adobe, form the circular base, build and shape the dome, close the upper courses, and apply plaster and a final finish.

The workshop also introduces foundation options and provides practical information intended to help participants plan and build an horno of their own. No previous experience is required.

What You’ll Learn

Participants will learn how to mix mud and work with adobe blocks to form an horno; prepare and fill the base; create an opening template; lay adobe to form and progressively tilt the dome; close the upper courses; and plaster and finish the completed horno. The workshop also provides an overview of foundation options and guidance for planning an horno project at home.
